Sofía Fonseca-Pérez has known she wanted to go into medicine since middle school.
“I want to give back to people,” she says. “Everyone deserves access to health care, regardless of their background.”
That belief carried her to San Diego State University, where she’s now a junior, and into her role as Public Health Chair for the SDSU Flying Samaritans, a student-run nonprofit that organizes free medical, dental, and mental health clinics across the border in Tijuana. Last year alone, the group saw 857 patients, all through the work of students who show up, month after month, and don’t stop.
Sofía is LumenSparQ’s newest SparQ, and her story is one of trust built slowly: through language, through repeat visits, and through a belief that access to care shouldn’t depend on where you’re from.
