Do The Most Good

Thea Chimilio: A SparQ of Hope and Compassion

In the heart of Los Angeles, where the vibrant tapestry of cultures meets the challenges of gentrification and housing insecurity, Thea Chimilio stands out as a pillar of strength and empathy. Born in Belize and moving to the United States at the tender age of eight, Thea’s journey is one of resilience, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to doing all that you can with the resources available.

Roots of Service and Early Life

Thea’s narrative took a pivotal turn upon her arrival in Los Angeles from Belize. Growing up in South Los Angeles and navigating the complexities of a new country, Thea found solace and support in her community and the principal of her new private school, also Belizean, who even helped her family with a payment plan so they could financially manage her education. This early experience of community support and kindness laid the foundation for Thea’s path in life.

Her family, deeply rooted in the health and education sectors, became her greatest source of inspiration. Many of her family members are involved in health or education, not just as professionals but as compassionate caregivers who take the time to understand the whole person. Witnessing her family members address challenges with empathy and action instilled in Thea a profound sense of purpose. “Do the most good you can with what you have,” a mantra passed down from her family, became a guiding principle in her life.

The gentrification of her childhood neighborhood further exposed Thea to the realities of displacement and hardship faced by many in her community. These experiences, coupled with the influence of strong women in her family who navigated life’s challenges with grace and determination, shaped Thea’s values and mission.

Making an Impact with SPY and The Helpful Homegirls

At Safe Place for Youth (SPY), a nonprofit dedicated to supporting young individuals facing housing and food insecurity, Thea has found her calling. Whether it’s through the Access Center, where members receive essential services, or through housing sites like “Lighthouse” and “A Bridge Home,” Thea’s efforts are making a tangible difference.

Her work is complemented by her involvement with The Helpful Homegirls, a nonprofit that organizes drives and fundraisers to support those in need. Together, these organizations embody Thea’s belief in the power of community action.

“Do the most good you can with what you have. It’s not just about addressing the immediate needs; it’s about understanding the whole person and what they’re going through on a personal level. That’s where real change begins.”

The Importance of Education

Amidst her tireless work with Safe Place for Youth and The Helpful Homegirls, Thea Chimilio is also advancing her academic pursuits with a focus on public health. Currently enrolled in a master’s program at the University of Southern California (USC), Thea is deepening her understanding and expertise in public health to further enhance her impact on the community she serves. Her studies at USC, coupled with her undergraduate work at the University of California, Irvine (UCI), where she majored in Public Health with a policy focus, have equipped her with the knowledge and skills necessary to address complex health issues.

While at UCI, Thea was actively involved in student government, advocating for campus-wide changes and lobbying for student rights. This experience, although challenging, helped shape her approach to advocacy and community service, reinforcing her belief in the power of grassroots efforts and direct action.

Thea’s educational journey is a testament to her dedication to not just understanding the challenges faced by those around her, but actively seeking solutions. Her academic achievements and ongoing studies are a critical component of her work, providing a solid foundation for her efforts to create a healthier, more equitable community.

The Steps of Hope Campaign

A highlight of Thea’s work this year has been the Steps of Hope Campaign, a collaborative effort between LumenSparQ, The Helpful Homegirls, and SPY. Together, we provided 110 pairs of shoes for those facing housing insecurity. This initiative saw contributions from the wider Los Angeles community in the form of newly purchased shoes from our Amazon Gift Registry, donations of lightly used shoes, and monetary contributions, all matched by LumenSparQ. The success of this campaign underscores the collective power of our community to make a significant impact.

A Vision for the Future: Bridging Communities and Cultures

Thea Chimilio’s aspirations for the future are deeply rooted in the rich tapestry of her Belizean heritage and the profound influence of her family’s legacy of service. Drawing strength from these foundations, Thea envisions a future where her work in public health bridges the gap between diverse communities in Los Angeles, fostering an environment of inclusivity, health equity, and mutual support.

Her journey, marked by challenges overcome and barriers broken, serves as a vivid illustration of the transformative power of kindness, empathy, and resilience. Thea’s commitment extends beyond the immediate; she seeks to dismantle systemic barriers to health and well-being, ensuring that every individual, regardless of their background or circumstances, has access to the care and resources they need to thrive.

In Los Angeles, a city of vibrant diversity yet marked by disparities, Thea’s work is more than a career—it’s a calling. She aims to leverage her education in public health, her hands-on experience with organizations like Safe Place for Youth and The Helpful Homegirls, and her journey from Belize to the heart of LA, to create lasting change. By focusing on holistic solutions that address the root causes of health and housing insecurity, Thea is dedicated to building stronger, healthier communities.

Looking ahead, Thea’s vision is clear: to cultivate a future where empathy drives action, where community well-being is paramount, and where every person, no matter their journey, feels valued and supported. Her path forward is illuminated by the lessons of her past and the promise of a future where everyone has the opportunity to live a life of health, dignity, and potential.

Thea’s story is not just a testament to her own strength and determination; it’s a call to action for all of us to contribute to a world where compassion and understanding are the cornerstones of community. As she continues her work in public health, her focus remains steadfast on the needs of her community in Los Angeles, inspired by her roots and fueled by a family tradition of making a difference—one person, one community at a time.
