In times of crisis, community is more important than ever. Today, LumenSparQ joined Safe Place for Youth (SPY) in their incredible relief efforts, temporarily transforming their Access Center into a distribution hub to sort, pack, and distribute essential items to those affected by the recent fires.
The devastation left behind by these fires has displaced families, disrupted lives, and left many without basic necessities. During such moments, it can be overwhelming to figure out where to start or how to help. It’s easy to feel powerless in the face of such loss, but it is in these very moments that collective action and compassion matter most.
Turning Donations into Hope
When we arrived in the late morning, we were warmly welcomed by Emily and the dedicated SPY team, who immediately set us to work. The need was clear, and so was the urgency.
Our team, along with other volunteers, took on a variety of tasks, ensuring that donated goods were efficiently processed and ready for distribution:
🔹 Unpacking boxes filled with essential items—clothing, shoes, blankets, and other items.
🔹 Sorting clothing carefully, distinguishing items by condition and categorizing them into sections for men, women, and children.
🔹 Bagging and labeling items to streamline the distribution process, making it easier for those in need to find what they require.
Every item we sorted carried a story—someone’s generosity, someone’s need, and our shared responsibility to bridge that gap. Each piece of clothing, each carefully packed bag, represented more than just material aid. It was a small but meaningful reminder to recipients that they are seen, valued, and not alone.
The Power of Collective Action
As mentioned previously, it is sometimes difficult to know exactly where you can be of service. That uncertainty can lead to a sense of helplessness, especially when the scale of the crisis feels insurmountable. But showing up—whether by donating, volunteering, or spreading awareness—is one of the most powerful actions we can take.
Organizations like Safe Place for Youth make it easy to plug into meaningful work. They provide structure, efficiency, and a direct connection to those in need, ensuring that every effort—no matter how small—has a tangible impact.
How You Can Help
SPY’s volunteer sign-ups are open through February 7th, and there is still much work to be done. If you’ve been looking for a way to provide support, this is it. Your time, energy, and willingness to serve can make all the difference.

As we wrapped up our time at SPY today, I was reminded once again of the profound power of community. When people come together with a shared purpose—to support, uplift, and restore hope—real change happens.
💙 To everyone who has already volunteered, donated, or contributed in any way, thank you. Your kindness and action are proof that even in the darkest moments, there is light.
