Each year, I attend the Impressions Expo (ISS) in Long Beach, an essential event for those in the apparel decoration industry. It’s a place to explore the latest technologies, style trends, and business strategies—but this year, something else stood out to me. With the devastating fires affecting Los Angeles, I saw an opportunity to extend the reach of LumenSparQ in a way I hadn’t anticipated.
At ISS, exhibitors often give out sample t-shirts, hoodies, and other apparel items—some already printed, others ready for decoration. As I collected a few for my business, I realized that these items could serve a much greater purpose. Many in our community have lost not just their homes, but even the most basic necessities. While used clothing donations have been a lifeline for those affected, having access to new clothing can offer a sense of dignity and normalcy in a time of upheaval. There is something profoundly affirming about receiving something that is entirely yours, unworn, and meant just for you.
With that in mind, I decided to approach vendors at ISS with a different kind of request. Instead of merely gathering industry insights, I put on my LumenSparQ lens and began asking exhibitors about their plans for any leftover apparel. Would they consider donating to support fire-affected families in Los Angeles? Many shared that they give out all their samples during the show, while some were actively setting aside apparel for fire relief efforts—a reassuring sign of solidarity.
One company, however, stood out. Grimco, a woman-owned business with a longstanding commitment to philanthropy, was eager to contribute. One of their representatives shared that her partner is a first responder and that this cause hit particularly close to home. At the end of the final day, Grimco generously donated over a hundred and twenty t-shirts and a few hoodies to LumenSparQ. And as a thoughtful bonus, they even gifted a gallon of screenprinting ink for my company, Good Vibe Design—an unexpected but deeply appreciated gesture.
These donations, while just one piece of a much larger effort, will help bring warmth and a small sense of comfort to those who have endured so much. Los Angeles is a city known for its resilience, and this act of kindness is a testament to the collective strength of our community.
To Grimco, and to all those working to support Angelenos during this challenging time—thank you. Your generosity is more than just fabric and ink; it’s a thread in the larger tapestry of rebuilding lives.
